Living in McIntyre Hall: what to know before you pack

The room

McIntyre Hall rooms use the same extra-long twin mattress as UW's newer halls (80" L x 39" W x 8" D), but the frame is more flexible: variable height for a single, bunked or loft-style setup, reaching 54 inches from the floor to the bottom of the mattress when lofted. Storage is wardrobes rather than a dresser and closet -- two per room, each with a hanging area, a shelf and four lower drawers -- and the desk is a built-in shared unit where each resident gets three drawers plus a side desk table and chair. There is a vanity with sink, mirror and under storage, a bulletin board running the full length of both sides of the desk, and two windows with built-in blinds, one on each side of the room. Ceilings are 8 feet. Bathrooms are community-style down the hall. Because there is no built-in Microfridge, students bring their own refrigerator (3.5 cubic feet or smaller, under 900 watts) and microwave (under 900 watts).

Day to day

McIntyre Hall is part of UW's Legacy Halls alongside Orr, though Orr now operates as the Upperclassman Hall, restricted to students who have already lived in a UW hall for a year, have sophomore standing with 24 post-high-school credit hours, or are 21 or older -- which leaves McIntyre as the Legacy option for incoming freshmen. UW's housing FAQ states directly that McIntyre and Orr are not air-conditioned, adding that students generally find temperatures comfortable most of the year; heaters are also prohibited, since heat is provided. The hall has secured entry, community bathrooms, community lounges, study rooms, storage lockers outside the building and laundry reached through the campus tunnels.

Move-in day

First-year move-in is Friday August 21 and Saturday August 22, 2026, ahead of Saddle Up week (August 24-28); Saddle Up is required for first-year students, so that is the weekend nearly all freshmen arrive, while August 29 is returning-student move-in. Arrival times are staggered -- 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday -- and McIntyre traffic comes in off Grand Avenue near 15th Street rather than the stadium lot used for North and South Hall. UW closes Willett Drive between 15th and 22nd, 15th Street between Ivinson and Bradley, and 19th Street between Harney and Willett during the window.
