What to bring to Iowa State Universitydorms — and what’s already there
Every Iowa Statefreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.
⚠ Window and portable AC units that vent outdoors are prohibited, but a freestanding evaporative room cooler IS allowed -- and fans plus coolers must not exceed 80 watts combined, so an oversized floor fan can put you over the limit.
⚠ Refrigerators and other large appliances must be powered directly from a wall outlet; plugging them into a power strip is prohibited. Fridges are capped at 4.5 cubic feet, 230 watts, 2 amps.

- What size mattress do Iowa State dorm beds use?
- Every residence hall bed uses an extra-long twin mattress measuring 36 in x 80 in x 8 in, on a lofted metal frame (39 1/4 in x 87 5/6 in x 72 in). Per the lofting policy, you may keep the bed lofted or de-loft it on your own, but it must be returned to its lofted state at checkout.
- Is on-campus housing required for freshmen at Iowa State?
- No. The Department of Residence contract terms state there is no requirement for any student to live in on-campus housing, describing it as a privilege that students must be eligible for and maintain eligibility for -- though most new students choose to live in the halls.
- Can I bring my own microwave and refrigerator?
