What to bring to University of Minnesota, Twin Citiesdorms — and what’s already there

Every the U of Mfreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.

⚠ Everyone must evacuate immediately during any building fire alarm; per the policy, "Minneapolis and St. Paul fire departments cannot begin their job until everyone is out of the building," and leaving is required "in compliance with Minnesota State Fire Code and state law."

⚠ Candles and incense must be removed within 48 hours once flagged; any found may be confiscated or destroyed, and Residence Life staff will not store them for you.

⚠ There is a $100 charge for beds left lofted at spring move-out — residents must deloft before leaving.

⚠ On-campus housing is guaranteed for first-year students who meet all four conditions (admission, application plus $200 payment by May 15, orientation by July 24, and accepting any assignment offered); those who don't are assigned only if space is available. UMN does not publish a mandatory live-on-campus requirement for the Twin Cities campus.

What size bed is in University of Minnesota residence halls?

An extra-long twin, 36 x 80 in., in nearly every building — Keeler Apartments have standard full beds instead. Beds can be left standard, lofted, or bunked; UMN says standard beds have "up to 27 inches of storage space below them." A few rooms can't be reconfigured because of space limits, though the exceptions list UMN references isn't currently published — confirm with Residence Life.

Are all UMN residence halls air-conditioned?

No. "Air conditioning" is listed among building features for Centennial, Frontier, Territorial, Pioneer, and 17th Avenue, but it does not appear anywhere on Sanford's page — so check the specific hall.

Do first-year students have to buy a meal plan?

Yes. All students living in UMN residence halls are required to have one of two unlimited meal plans; residents are automatically enrolled in the Unlimited Plan unless they voluntarily enroll in Unlimited Plus.

Can I bring a mini-fridge and microwave?

Yes — one microwave (700 watts or less) and one mini-fridge (4.3 cubic feet or less) per room. No other major appliances, including air conditioners or dishwasher units, are permitted in any residence hall, and small appliances with an open heating element (electric grills, air fryers, rice cookers, hot plates, toaster ovens) are prohibited.

When do first-year students move in for fall 2026?

Tuesday, September 1 or Wednesday, September 2, 2026 — the two days Housing & Residential Life staff and volunteers help unload vehicles. Students arriving on other days unload on their own with provided moving carts.
