The room

Frontier is a doubles-first building: about 273 of its rooms are standard two-person doubles averaging 187 sq ft, plus roughly 46 "two-person suites" that UMN describes as "two rooms occupied by two residents in each room with one shared 3/4 bath including a shower and toilet separating the rooms and with sinks located in each room," averaging 219 sq ft. Every space includes an extra-long twin bed (36 x 80 in.) residents can loft, bunk, or leave standard — Frontier shares its lofting instructions with 17th Avenue and Sanford, with wood and metal stabilizer bar options — along with a desk and chair, closet, drawer space, carpeted floors, window coverings, a cable TV jack, and one gigabit Ethernet jack per resident (bring your own cords for both). For standard doubles, UMN says the common bathroom is "shared by approximately seven rooms," a notably tighter ratio than Centennial's ~15 or Territorial's ~24.

Day to day

Built in 1959 with four floors and 735 first-year residents, Frontier has the amenities typical of the Superblock: laundry included, a building kitchen, common area lounges, game room, meditation room, music practice rooms, study rooms, a tech lab, and a 24/7 Information Desk — plus tutoring for CSE majors. It houses several Living Learning Communities: Biology House, Nursing, Taylor House, and WISE. Like its Superblock neighbors other than Pioneer, Frontier has no dining hall of its own; residents walk to Pioneer a few minutes away or use their meal plan at Sanford, 17th Avenue, or Middlebrook. UMN lists the building as a 5-minute walk to the Metro Line's East Bank Station, 7 minutes to the Recreation and Wellness Center, and 9 minutes to Huntington Bank Stadium.

Move-in day

As part of the Superblock, Frontier follows the general first-year move-in schedule: assigned students move in on Tuesday, September 1 or Wednesday, September 2, 2026, when Housing staff and volunteers help unload vehicles at 701 Fulton Street SE, with UMN aiming for an arrive-check-in-unload turnaround of 10-15 minutes before the driver moves to long-term parking. Students moving in on any other date unload on their own using the building's moving carts. Bring only one vehicle, and do not bring a trailer or oversized vehicle. Packages addressed to a student's name and room number can start arriving on campus as early as Friday, August 28, 2026.
