- How are NDSU freshman hall assignments made?
- NDSU assigns first-year housing by application date, so the earlier you apply, the better your odds of getting a preferred hall. On-campus housing is guaranteed for first-year students even if you apply late, but late applicants get less choice over hall and roommate.
- Do all NDSU freshmen have to live on campus?
- Yes — NDSU requires all first-year students (anyone with a high school diploma from January 2026 or later) to live in a residence hall. Exemptions need an approved form and apply if you live with a parent or guardian within 35 miles, carry 11 credit hours or fewer, have custody of a child, are married, are in a fully-online program, or have documented extenuating circumstances.
- What if my parents move within 35 miles of campus during the year?
- Your housing contract is for the full year regardless. Even if you'd otherwise qualify for the local-family exemption, becoming eligible mid-year doesn't let you break the contract early.
