Living in Friley Hall: what to know before you pack

The room

Friley rooms come as singles or doubles built around the same lofted-bed frame used campus-wide: an XL twin mattress (36 in x 80 in x 8 in) on a metal loft that students can lower themselves and must re-loft before checkout. The published furnishings are a lofted bed, a desk with bookshelf and desk chair, a closet, a three-drawer dresser, waste basket, recycle bin, mirror and blinds. Because Friley is split between AC and non-AC pricing tiers -- air-conditioned doubles run $6,251 against $5,793 without -- packing a fan is a safe hedge unless your confirmation specifically says you landed an air-conditioned room.

Day to day

Friley houses 1,220 residents across 5 floors and more than 20 named houses, each with its own RA and a communal bathroom shared by the house. A renovation gutted those community bathrooms and rebuilt them with floor-to-ceiling walls and doors for full privacy, with every shower getting a separate dressing area. Four houses -- Lincoln, Palmer, Pennell, and Stange -- are designated substance-free, meaning alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs are prohibited there regardless of a resident's age. A meal plan is required for everyone in the hall, and Friley stays open over winter break. Lincoln house is double-occupancy only, unlike the mixed single/double setup elsewhere in the building.

Move-in day

Friley follows Iowa State's campus-wide new-student move-in window: Tuesday, August 18 for even-numbered rooms and Wednesday, August 19 for odd-numbered rooms, with check-in open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. both days. Friley sits on west campus with State Gym and Beyer Hall just around the corner and two dining centers, including Windows on the first floor, within minutes. It is a sprawling five-floor building with more than 20 houses, so plan for some walking distance from unloading zones to your specific house's entrance. Because room assignments split AC and non-AC pricing, double-check your confirmation for which you landed before deciding how much cooling gear to load into the car.
