Living in Buchanan Hall: what to know before you pack
The room
Buchanan is suite-style: single suites pair two single rooms sharing one full bathroom between two people, while double suites pair two double rooms sharing a bathroom among four people. Every room gets the campus-standard lofted bed along with a wardrobe with drawers, a corner desk with chair and bookshelf, window blinds, mirror, wastebasket, recycling basket, and its own in-room sink and medicine cabinet -- a step up from the sink-free rooms in Iowa State's traditional halls. All rooms are air-conditioned. Because Buchanan is priced as a suite building rather than traditional-style, room rates run higher: $7,665 for a double suite and $8,805 for a single suite.
Day to day
Buchanan is a nine-floor, 409-resident suite building on south campus with large dens and kitchenettes built into most suite clusters -- floors 3 through 9 have a kitchenette in the shared den, while floor 2's kitchenette sits in the main lounge, and floors 1 through 3 have access to the third-floor kitchenette. A meal plan is still required for residents even with in-suite cooking space. The hall has laundry facilities on the lower level, a large main-floor lounge, and utilities included in the room rate; it stays open during winter break for students who need to remain on campus.
Move-in day
Buchanan follows Iowa State's campus-wide new-student move-in window: Tuesday, August 18 for even-numbered rooms and Wednesday, August 19 for odd-numbered rooms, with check-in from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. As a 9-floor suite building, coordinate with your suitemates ahead of time on shared bathroom and den/kitchenette setup so move-in day doesn't turn into a scheduling scramble. Buchanan sits on south campus at 2160 Lincoln Way, a different location than the west- and east-campus traditional halls.
