What to bring to West Virginia Universitydorms — and what’s already there

Every WVUfreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.

⚠ First-year and transfer students (under 24 transferable credits) who skip the housing application are automatically billed the standard double-room rate.

⚠ Beds may not be lofted or bunked anywhere on campus — only plastic risers up to 6 inches tall are allowed. Frames themselves are height-adjustable.

⚠ Personal AC units and standalone microwaves are banned campus-wide; only a rented MicroFridge combo unit is permitted, though you may also bring one mini fridge up to 3.2 cu ft / 10 amps.

⚠ Boreman and Dadisman are the only WVU halls without air conditioning — if you are assigned to either, pack a fan. Every other hall is air conditioned.

⚠ Seneca Hall uses a shorter regular twin mattress; every other hall uses twin XL. Confirm your hall before buying sheets.

Common questions about West Virginia University dorms

Are first-year students required to live on campus at WVU?

Yes. All incoming undergraduates with fewer than 24 transferable college credits must live in a WVU residence hall. Credits earned in high school (dual credit or AP) do not count toward the 24. Narrow exemptions exist for students from six contiguous WV counties (Harrison, Marion, Monongalia, Preston, Taylor, Wetzel) and two PA counties (Fayette, Greene), married students, custodial parents, veterans with one year of consecutive active-duty service, and students who turn 21 by September 1 of their first year. An exemption must be formally requested through the housing portal — it is never automatic.

What size bed is in WVU dorms?

Most halls use an extra-long twin; Seneca Hall is the exception with a regular twin. WVU publishes two slightly different figures: the hall room-details pages list the furniture as 36" x 80" (36" x 72" at Seneca), while WVU's Linen Sizes chart — the one to follow when buying sheets — lists Extra-Long Twin 38" x 80" for all other halls and Standard Twin 38" x 75" for Seneca. Either way: twin XL everywhere except Seneca, which needs regular twin sheets.

Can I bring a mini fridge and microwave?

You can bring your own mini fridge up to 3.2 cubic feet and 10 amps, but standalone microwaves aren't allowed in most halls — only a rented MicroFridge combo refrigerator/microwave unit. Only one MicroFridge may be rented per room, and it must plug directly into a wall outlet, not a power strip. Seneca Hall and Oakland Apartments are the exception: their suites have fire-safety-rated kitchens, so residents there may keep small kitchen appliances.

Can I loft or bunk my bed?

No. WVU prohibits lofting and bunking beds campus-wide for safety reasons; residents may only add plastic risers up to 6 inches tall. The bed frames themselves can be set to different heights, and WVU's published under-bed clearances are measured at the highest setting.

When is Fall 2026 move-in at WVU?

University housing opens Thursday, August 13 through Saturday, August 15, 2026, with Welcome Week running Saturday, August 15 through Saturday, August 22.
