What to bring to Marshall Universitydorms — and what’s already there

Every Marshallfreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.

⚠ Concealed carry of a licensed pistol or revolver is permitted under West Virginia's Campus Self-Defense Act, but students who bring one must secure a safe through College Products and store the firearm in it whenever it is unattended.

⚠ Individual room and suite trash cans are no longer provided, and improper disposal of personal room trash results in disciplinary measures plus a $100 cleaning charge.

⚠ Smoking or vaping anywhere in a residence hall, including a private room, carries a $75 fine per occurrence.

⚠ Microwaves are capped at 700 watts (one per room in Twin Towers East/West and Buskirk, one per suite in Marshall Commons) and refrigerators/microfridges cannot exceed 2.5 amps; all must plug directly into a wall outlet, never a surge protector.

⚠ Marshall publishes no bunking, lofting, or under-bed clearance specification for any hall, and Residence Hall Guide F3.3 bans elevating furniture on cinder blocks or other risers — confirm with Residence Life before planning under-bed storage.

What size beds are in Marshall dorm rooms?

All residence halls use Twin XL mattresses — one bed frame and mattress per occupant, alongside a desk, chair, dresser, and closet space. Marshall does not publish a bunking or lofting policy, a bed-height setting, or an under-bed clearance measurement for any hall, and the Residence Hall Guide separately prohibits elevating furniture on cinder blocks or similar risers. If you're planning under-bed storage, confirm what your specific room allows with Housing and Residence Life before you buy bins.

Are Marshall dorms air conditioned?

Yes — Marshall's housing FAQ states plainly that all residence halls have air conditioning, and the First-Year and Buskirk hall pages each specify central heating and air conditioning. Residents are prohibited from installing their own floor or window AC units; portable fans are permitted as long as they have no exposed heating or cooling elements.

What can't I bring to my Marshall dorm room?

Hot plates, toasters, toaster ovens, Instapots, electric skillets, barbecue grills and anything else with an exposed heating element, candles and incense, halogen lamps, extension cords, weapons (including any knife with a blade longer than 3 inches), alcohol regardless of age, and pets other than fish in a tank up to 10 gallons are all banned; the full list is in Marshall's Residence Hall Guide.

Do freshmen have to live on campus at Marshall?

Yes — Marshall requires all single freshman and sophomore students enrolled in 12 or more credit hours to live in the residence halls and carry a meal plan, until they reach junior standing at 60 credit hours. Releases are available for students who are married, are two years beyond high school graduation, are over 21, or live with a parent or legal guardian within 50 miles of campus, plus separate financial and medical releases; applications are due July 31 for fall.

When do freshmen move in for Fall 2026?

Freshman move-in was August 11-12, 2026, with returning upperclassmen following on August 14-16. Move-in is scheduled by class standing rather than by building, and every student signs up in advance for an enforced appointment time through the myMU move-in system.
