Living in Newell Hall: what to know before you pack

The room

Newell Hall houses 202 first-year and under-class students, with rooms varying from 1 to 3 students. They either open onto a central hallway and share community bathroom and lounge areas, or are suite style -- two bedrooms with a bathroom in the middle, which the residents of those rooms are responsible for cleaning. Every student gets a twin extra-long bed, 36 by 80 inches, that stays on the floor: Housing & Residence Life's furnishings policy permits no bed except a bunk bed to be elevated in any manner, and lofts, bed risers, and cinder blocks are all on the do-not-bring list. Rooms come with wall-to-wall carpet, blinds, a wardrobe, dresser, and desk with chair for each student, plus the required university MicroFridge. An AC/heating unit is in every room, with cable, internet, and electric heat/AC included in the room rate.

Day to day

Newell's suite-style rooms give some students a bathroom shared with just one other bedroom, while hallway rooms use community bathrooms and put residents in closer daily contact with the floor -- the tradeoff being that suite residents clean their own bathroom while community bathrooms are cleaned daily by housekeeping. Community lounges sit on each floor and community kitchens on floors 2 and 3, with a large laundry room in the building. Newell is staffed by a residence life coordinator and resident assistants, secured 24 hours a day with card access to the building and elevators and a front desk staffed around the clock. At 202 residents it's mid-sized among Towson's first-year buildings -- bigger than Richmond, smaller than the Glen Complex towers.

Move-in day

Like every first-year hall at Towson, Newell has no hall-specific move-in day; residents come with the universitywide new-student window. Wednesday, August 19, 2026, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., is for last names A-K, and Thursday, August 20, same hours, for L-Z. All new students check in at SECU Arena rather than at Newell, parking in Lot 8, and each resident picks a specific one-hour arrival slot in advance -- invitations are emailed August 6, 2026 and the selection process opens August 7. Because Newell mixes hallway and suite rooms, some families will be dropping off suitemates in different configurations on the same day, so leave extra time for coordinating shared-bathroom logistics.
