UMBC Freshman Dorms 2026

UMBC does not require or guarantee freshman housing — as a result, spots are secured with a $200 mandatory reservation fee, and some specialized programs (Meyerhoff Scholars, CWIT, Honors College) steer students toward specific halls. All four first-year halls — Chesapeake, Patapsco, Potomac, and Susquehanna — provide Twin XL beds on height-adjustable frames (24"-36" of underbed storage) and individually controlled AC/heating as standard. New Student Move-In runs Thursday, August 20 (8-10 a.m., LLC/Scholars) and Friday, August 21 (8 a.m.-1 p.m., all other new students), ahead of Convocation on Sunday, August 23 and the first day of classes on Monday, August 24, 2026.

Common questions about UMBC dorms

I am a current resident, can I participate in Housing Selection?
Yes. In addition to being a current resident, you must also be in good financial standing. Students with outstanding student account balances greater than $250 will not be granted access to the application.
What is the purpose of the Housing Selection application?
The primary purpose of the application is for you to sign the housing contract (license) and pay the reservation fee, which guarantees you will have housing for the upcoming year.
Do I have to pay the reservation fee?
Yes. The housing reservation fee is mandatory. The reservation fee money will be applied as a credit toward your first housing bill.
Do I need to form a roommate group?
No, students may apply for housing and select a room as an individual.
How do I know if a room is 9-month or quiet lifestyle?
Rooms are designated in the housing portal. Please make sure the group leader selects carefully and reviews the room description before selecting.
