Wichita State University Freshman Dorms 2026

Wichita State requires first-year students to live on campus for their first two semesters, split between two halls: Shocker Hall (Twin XL beds, suite-shared bathrooms, on-site dining hall) and the newer Suites (Full beds, a private bathroom in each suite, in-suite kitchenette and laundry). First-year residents in both halls must buy one of the three Unlimited meal plans. WSU's housing pages do not itemize air conditioning for either building; the campus-wide HVAC policy sets cooling-season temperatures and bans personal A/C units, so cooling almost certainly exists, but confirm with Housing and Residence Life. Fall 2026 move-in begins Saturday, August 8, with a full-service weekend running through Sunday, August 9, ahead of classes starting Monday, August 17.

What to bring to Wichita State Universitydorms — and what’s already there

Every Wichita Statefreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.

First-year students must live in a WSU residence hall for their first two semesters under Policy 8.06 unless they qualify for an exemption (21+, 24+ transfer credits, married, dependent child, Greek housing, living with a parent/guardian, grandparent, aunt or uncle in the Greater Sedgwick County area of eight counties, or online-only enrollment).

WSU publishes two different versions of the last exemption: Policy 8.06 says "enrolled solely in online courses" while the housing FAQ says "enrolled in less than 12 credit hours" -- confirm which applies before filing an exemption request.

Residents are not allowed to loft or bunk their own beds: the HRL Handbook requires a Maintenance Request Form so WSU staff do it, and warns the work may carry a fee.

Refrigerators are capped at 4.9 cubic feet and microwaves at 700 watts under the HRL Handbook.

The Suites and The Flats come with a fridge (and the Suites kitchenette includes a microwave), so a mini fridge and microwave are a Shocker Hall purchase only.

The Suites' published furniture list includes no dresser, unlike Shocker Hall -- confirm storage with Housing and Residence Life before buying a wardrobe rack.

WSU does not itemize air conditioning for either first-year hall; Policy 11.27 bans personal air conditioning units campus-wide, so a window unit is not a fallback.

All new on-campus residents must submit proof of meningitis (MenACWY) vaccination or a waiver before they can select a move-in check-in time slot.

Failure to evacuate a hall within 5 minutes of a fire alarm is grounds for disciplinary action, and smoking-related damage carries a restitution fine starting at $100.

Common questions about Wichita State University dorms

What size bed does WSU provide?
Shocker Hall uses Twin XL beds (38 in wide x 80 in long); The Suites uses Full-size beds (54.5 in wide x 75.25 in long) -- bring sheets sized for your specific hall, because bedding for one will not fit the other.
Do freshmen have to live on campus at Wichita State?
Yes. WSU Policy 8.06 requires first-year students to live in a residence hall for their first two semesters unless they qualify for a published exemption (21+, 24+ transfer credits, married, dependent child, Greek housing, living with a parent/guardian, grandparent, aunt or uncle in the Greater Sedgwick County area, or online-only enrollment).
Can I bring my own fridge and microwave?
A mini fridge up to 4.9 cubic feet and a microwave up to 700 watts are allowed. Practically that is a Shocker Hall purchase only -- The Suites and The Flats already include a fridge, and the Suites kitchenette has a microwave in a built-in cubby.
Can I loft my bed at Wichita State?
Shocker Hall beds can be lofted, but you cannot do it yourself. The HRL Handbook says residents must submit a Maintenance Request Form so WSU maintenance staff perform the work, and it may carry a fee. WSU does not publish a loft policy for The Suites' Full beds at all.
What can't I bring to a WSU residence hall?
Candles and open flames, halogen lamps, space heaters, hot plates, toasters, George Foreman grills, pressure cookers, deep fryers, personal A/C units, LED light strips, command strips and tape, and pets other than fish under 20 gallons are all banned under the HRL Handbook and packing list.
When does Fall 2026 move-in start?
Move-in begins Saturday, August 8, 2026, with a full-service weekend (staff on hand to help) running through Sunday, August 9. You can move in any day after August 8; Fall 2026 classes begin Monday, August 17.
