Living in Ackley/Shilling Hall: what to know before you pack

The room

Bedrooms measure 12 feet by 12 feet 2 inches, with a small 5 foot 5 inch by 6 foot 1 inch entrance area. Suites pair two bedrooms around one connecting bathroom -- one shower and toilet partitioned off for privacy, a counter with two sinks, two medicine cabinets with mirrors, and four towel bars -- shared by all four suitemates, who are responsible for cleaning it. Twin XL beds are listed as loftable, bunkable and traditional, and loft to any height from 18 inches off the floor to over 5 feet using the kit already in the room. Storage is one shared 6-drawer dresser or two 3-drawer dressers, plus one closet 72 inches wide. Optional carpet, futons, and EcoMax fridge/microwave combos are available to rent through MyCollegeFridge.com.

Day to day

Built in 1963 as part of Goldsworth Valley 1, Ackley/Shilling sits in the Valley neighborhood off Goldsworth Drive, about a 7-minute walk from the Valley Dining Center. Coed floors include female, male, and all-gender suites, and the hall hosts the Engineering House (Ackley) and Bronco Connect (Shilling) Living Learning Communities; Ackley also has its own computer lab with engineering software. A meal plan is required. Unlike Valley Oaks and Western Heights, WMU does not list this building as air-conditioned -- but it is one of only two halls with in-room Ethernet ports.

Move-in day

Ackley/Shilling follows WMU's general Fall 2026 first-year move-in window of August 27-29, with a 60-minute arrival block booked through the housing portal (sign-up opens August 3 at 10 a.m.). Its Valley location means move-in traffic routes through Goldsworth Valley Drive and Valley 1 Drive rather than central campus, with parking in lots 53 and 55; check the hall-specific parking and cart-loading instructions Housing sends closer to move-in.
