Living in State Quad: what to know before you pack

The room

State Quad rooms are organized into four-, five-, or six-person suites sharing one bathroom, rather than traditional double rooms off a hallway. Each student gets a university-issued extra-long twin mattress and frame, desk, chair, and dresser -- families should still bring sheets sized for a Twin XL, a mattress topper, and a comforter. Suite common space is limited, so under-bed bins and a slim closet organizer earn their keep. The suite bathroom is shared among suitemates only, not the whole floor, which cuts down on hallway bathroom traffic compared to some other campus halls.

Day to day

An RA is assigned to every floor of the low-rise buildings and to every other floor of Eastman Tower, State Quad's high-rise. The quad blends general first-year students with the Honors College community concentrated in Irving, Melville, and Steinmetz Halls, plus several Living-Learning Communities and Gender-Inclusive Housing. Laundry is free and available 24/7 across UAlbany housing, with laundry rooms in each building's basement and additional per-floor laundry rooms in Tappan and Whitman Halls. Dining is right on the quad -- the State Quad Dining Hall is in Whitman Hall, which also has a Broadview ATM in its lobby. Study lounges sit on every floor of the low-rises and every other floor of Eastman Tower, and the quad has a game room with billiards, foosball, and air hockey.

Move-in day

Honors College, EOP, Living-Learning Community, freshman athlete, and new international residents move into State Quad on Monday, August 17, 2026, ahead of the general population. All other first-year State Quad residents move in Tuesday, August 18, or Wednesday, August 19, 2026, by scheduled check-in appointment. Rooms are held for assigned students through Monday, August 24, 2026. Expect hot, humid conditions on move-in day -- UAlbany's own guidance is that most rooms do not have air conditioning.
