What to bring to Louisiana State Universitydorms — and what’s already there

⚠ Bed risers are explicitly prohibited by LSU — they are the first item on Residential Life's banned list, so do not buy them to gain under-bed storage.

What size mattress do LSU dorm rooms use?

It depends on the hall. LSU's own packing list says "Twin or Twin XL Sheets (Most are Twin XL)" — Azalea, Cedar, Broussard and McVoy are Twin XL, while Acadian and Herget use standard Twin. Check your assigned hall's page before buying sheets. LSU does not publish mattress measurements on the hall pages, so buy to the size label rather than to a dimension.

Can I bring a fridge and microwave?

Yes. LSU allows a microwave up to 800 watts and a mini-fridge up to 5 cubic feet and under 150 watts. Bed risers, however, are prohibited — plan under-bed storage around the bed as it ships.

Are LSU dorms air-conditioned?

Yes, but the system varies and is only itemized for the newest halls. Azalea and Cedar both list "Central A/C with Individual Room Controls" on their LSU pages. Older halls like Broussard and Acadian do not publish their A/C spec; LSU's Living on Campus Handbook says most Residential Life communities run on a heated-and-chilled-water system and refers to some rooms having university-installed window units. Personal A/C units are prohibited in all cases. Confirm the specific setup with Residential Life if assigned an older hall.

When do first-year students move in for Fall 2026?

August 14-16, 2026. Friday, August 14 is early arrival and adds a $200 charge to the fee bill, with slots at 2, 3:30, 5 and 6:30 p.m. Standard move-in is Saturday, August 15 (8 a.m. through 6:30 p.m.) and Sunday, August 16 (8 a.m. through 5 p.m.). Students choose their appointment in the housing portal July 1-24, 2026.

Is on-campus housing required for freshmen at LSU?

Yes. Full-time first-year students must live in LSU-managed campus housing for their first academic year — fall and spring for students starting in summer or fall. LSU lists exemptions for students who are 21 or older or married as of the first day of fall classes, have dependent children, are enrolled part-time, are in military service, have medical or disability needs, or reside with a parent or legal guardian within a 50-mile in-state radius, plus a committee review for other compelling circumstances. The last day to request an exemption or submit documentation is October 1 of the term.
