Living in Teter: what to know before you pack

The room

Teter offers single and double rooms furnished with a closet or wardrobe, a desk, a chair, and a single bed with an extra-long twin mattress that sits 20 inches from the floor. Teter is one of five IU buildings where the desk chair comes apart to create a floor rocker and a stool or table — a small thing that meaningfully changes how a small room can be arranged. The building's renovation was completed in 2020, so finishes are newer than in some of IU's older quads. Whether a Teter bed can be lofted is not published: IU says loftability depends on the residence hall and room type, and requests go through Bedloft, its third-party vendor. Residents may not reconfigure beds themselves and bed risers of any kind are prohibited. Virtual tours with floor plans and a virtual measuring tool are on Teter's official page for both room types.

Day to day

Teter is one of IU's biggest halls — 642 rooms and 1,219 beds — and residents consistently name location as the reason: it sits in the Central neighborhood at 501 N. Sunrise Dr., close to classes, dining halls, and the IU bus route. It houses four communities plus an Honors Residential Community: the Luddy Living-Learning Center for the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering, along with the Health Sciences, Asian/Pacific American, and Spectrum thematic communities. Those carry fees the room rate does not cover — $100 a semester for Luddy, $50 a semester for the thematic communities. The building has one of IU's Academic Support Centers, the Luddy LLC makerspace and labs, a library and study areas, the "Teter Theater" for watch parties, and a range of lounges, TV rooms, and meeting spaces. Laundry cost is included in the room rate. Teter prices in the Standard tier: $8,275 for the most common room in 2026-27, $9,516 at the high end.

Move-in day

New first-year Teter residents move in during Grand Move-In, Aug. 18-19 for fall 2026. Check-in is centralized and comes first: Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, 1001 E. 17th St., entering from the Indiana 45/46 Bypass at Gate 11, Purple Lot, with parking in the Green or Orange lot. Only the student may check in — not a parent or guardian — and they need their CrimsonCard, ideally loaded into a phone wallet beforehand. They receive the unload-and-go parking pass at check-in and put it on the dashboard. From there, drive to Teter and turn onto Sunrise Drive to unload, or park in the 10th Street lot. Unload in 15-20 minutes and keep one person with the vehicle so a driver can move it promptly. Confirm the exact date and time window in the Housing Portal, and plan to be in by the evening of Wednesday, Aug. 19 for the first floor meeting.
