What to bring to University of Pittsburghdorms — and what’s already there

Every Pittfreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.

⚠ Personal window and portable air conditioning units are prohibited in all Pitt housing -- but that is a ban on the appliance, not a statement that your building lacks AC. Pitt's Residential Handbook refers to residents 'living in unairconditioned buildings,' so AC varies by hall; confirm your assignment before deciding what cooling to pack.

⚠ Extension cords are prohibited, with one documented exception: the Residential Handbook permits an extension cord for a window fan in unairconditioned buildings, provided you use a cord or a surge-protected power strip but not both, never connect them in series, check the fan manufacturer's guidance, and keep the cord out of walkways.

What size bed is in a Pitt dorm room?

All four first-year halls covered here -- Litchfield Tower A, Litchfield Tower B, Holland Hall, and Forbes Hall -- list 'Twin Bed (XL)' in their Panther Central in-room amenities, so buy Twin XL sheets and a Twin XL mattress pad. Pitt's own packing list adds a hedge worth respecting: 'Bed (Sizes may vary. Check your residence hall's page for more information.)' Check your specific hall page before you buy.

Is on-campus housing required for Pitt freshmen?

No. Pitt does not require first-year students on the Pittsburgh campus to live on campus. Panther Central's FAQ states that first-year fall-term students admitted through the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid are guaranteed on-campus housing, and that students beginning Fall 2026 are guaranteed housing for at least two years if they meet the housing application and deposit deadlines in subsequent years.

Can I bring a mini fridge or microwave to a Pitt dorm?

First-Year Move-In is Saturday, August 15 and Sunday, August 16, 2026. Arrival windows are assigned by residence hall and floor in three blocks each day: 8-11 a.m., noon-3 p.m., and 4-7 p.m. Upper-class move-in follows on Friday, August 21 and Saturday, August 22.
