Living in Burge Hall: what to know before you pack

The room

Burge is a classic large community-style hall from 1959, and its own page lists first-year students among its residents. Rooms come with a desk, chair, dresser, closet, and window curtains; beds arrive pre-lofted, and the configuration is a choice rather than a fixed setting -- a high loft leaves 58 inches of open space under the lowest rail for a desk, dresser, or storage bins, while a high captain setting leaves 32 inches. Request your preference through the housing application before move-in, or submit a work order during the year; either way Housing staff make the adjustment rather than the student. Room types run single, double, and triple, and bathrooms range from community-style facilities to suite and private options depending on the room booked.

Day to day

Burge sits centrally on the east side of campus, close to the Pentacrest and downtown Iowa City, and its Burge Market Place is one of the busiest dining halls on campus. The building is co-ed and houses 922 students. Amenities listed on its page include air conditioning, a fitness center, laundry, wireless internet, a convenience store, an ITC print station, Cambus service, and multipurpose lounge and study space.

Move-in day

First-year move-in for fall 2026 runs across the campus-wide window of August 15-17, with each student selecting a specific day and two-hour arrival slot after login windows are assigned July 7-9. Burge's central location and loading areas make it one of the more straightforward halls for a quick unload, but families should still expect the tight traffic pattern and volunteer move-in crews typical of Iowa's big first-year buildings. Oversized vehicles are asked to come in the evening, with trailers accepted after 5:30 p.m.
