What to bring to Oregon State Universitydorms — and what’s already there

Every Oregon Statefreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.

⚠ Air conditioners are explicitly banned in every residence hall; UHDS lists only a small fan as an optional item to bring for cooling.

⚠ Command strips, adhesive hooks, and removable wallpaper are prohibited for wall decor — only finishing nails, thumbtacks, sticky tack, or painter's tape are allowed.

⚠ Cooking is not permitted in student rooms; only kitchenettes/hall kitchens allow cooking, and any candle or open-flame item is banned outright.

⚠ Residence hall smoke detectors are highly sensitive, and accidentally triggering the fire system can lead to university and Corvallis Fire Department disciplinary action.

⚠ Wireless routers, access points, and wireless printers are banned — only wired ethernet and wired-connection printers work on OSU's residence hall network.

⚠ Lofting a bed above its built-in height requires a UHDS rental kit ($280 nonrefundable for 2026-27) — students may not build their own lofts or use outside materials. Reservations confirmed by August 3, 2026 are installed before the year begins.

Common questions about Oregon State University dorms

What size bed is in an Oregon State residence hall room?

Every OSU residence hall room comes with an extra-long twin (36" x 80") bed and mattress, so pack XL-twin sheets specifically — standard twin sheets won't fit.

Are Oregon State dorms air-conditioned?

No. UHDS's official what-to-bring list places air conditioners under items to leave behind; a small fan is listed as an optional item to bring instead.

Can I bring a mini fridge or microwave to my Oregon State dorm room?

Small refrigerators are allowed if Energy Star-rated, 3.2 cubic feet or smaller, and drawing 11 amps or less. Stand-alone microwaves are not allowed in rooms — only a combo microwave/fridge unit (like a Microfridge) is permitted, since every hall already has a shared full-size fridge and floor-lounge microwaves.

Is on-campus housing required for first-year students at Oregon State?

Yes. OSU's First-Year Experience Live-On Residency Requirement requires incoming first-year students to live in the residence halls, with exemptions available in specific cases, such as living with immediate family within a 30-mile driving radius of campus or having graduated high school more than a year before starting classes.

When is fall 2026 move-in at Oregon State?

Move-in is a multi-day process from Wednesday, September 16 through Friday, September 18, 2026. Each residence hall is assigned a specific day, and students select a preferred arrival time slot within that day (available starting in late August).

How much does a loft kit cost at Oregon State?

The UHDS loft rental fee is $280 nonrefundable for the 2026-27 year, charged to your student account. A bunk kit is also $280, split so each roommate pays $140. Economy triple rooms come pre-configured with one lofted and two bunked beds at no charge. Students may not build their own lofts.
