Living in Wise Hall: what to know before you pack
The room
Wise Hall breaks from EMU's usual suite-double format: rooms are still doubles for first-year students, but bathrooms are community-style on each floor rather than shared between two adjoining bedrooms, and floors are single gender. Beds are a shorter extra-long twin here, 79 x 39 inches, with a standard clearance of 4 inches that can go up to 31 inches -- and unlike Phelps, Putnam, and Walton, Wise's frames genuinely can be lofted. The catch is process: EMU requires students to submit a work order in the first two weeks of the semester for Facilities to loft or deloft the bed, rather than doing it themselves on move-in day. The room is a bit larger than the suite halls at 11.5 x 15 feet, the dresser has four drawers instead of three, and the shared closet runs 54 x 60 inches. Upperclass students can also get singles or converted singles here.
Day to day
Wise stands out among EMU's first-year halls for having air conditioning built into each room rather than a building-wide central system. Kitchenettes sit on every floor, with a large community kitchenette on the 2nd floor that includes a full-size stove and a microwave, plus a full-size refrigerator/freezer and another microwave on the 1st floor. Laundry (WASH-maintained) is on the 3rd floor, the building has overnight monitored access, and the front desk is staffed 9am to midnight daily for keys, lockouts, packages, and equipment checkout. Wise is also EMU's cheapest residence hall for a double. Because it mixes first-year doubles with upperclass singles and converted singles, incoming students here share the building with more experienced residents than in the freshmen-only halls.
Move-in day
Wise first-year residents move in on EMU's Thursday, August 27, 2026 first-year day, in either a 9am-noon window (floors 4 and 5) or a 1pm-4pm window (floors 1, 2, and 3), checking in at the building's main lounge. The same 4-6pm late check-in option applies, and anyone who misses August 27 can check in August 28 on the posted schedule or anytime August 29-30 between 9am and 5pm; the August 27 date is reserved for students who registered for EMU Connect. If you want your bed lofted for the semester, get your work order request in early -- it isn't something Facilities turns around same-day during the move-in rush.
