- The eight LLC buildings (Gem, Syringa, Sage, Upham, CNR, Gault, Engineering, Honors) are not itemized individually by Housing, so confirm air conditioning beyond the suite living room, and whether your bed can be lofted, with Housing and Residence Life before move-in.
- Housing publishes no loft-kit policy for LLC rooms -- do not assume a loft kit is available or included; ask Residence Life before buying under-bed storage.
- U of I does not publish loft or clearance details for LLC rooms specifically — confirm with Residence Life.
Living in LLC Communities: what to know before you pack
The room
Most LLC rooms are single bedrooms inside a gender-specific suite shared by three to five students, though double, super single, and super double configurations also exist. Each bedroom has a twin XL bed, closet, desk, bookshelves, chair, and a set of three large drawers, while the shared suite adds a furnished living room, a private bathroom, and a kitchenette with a sink, refrigerator, and microwave. U of I does not publish loft or clearance details for LLC beds and does not describe a loft-kit request process, so treat under-bed storage as unconfirmed and ask Housing about your specific building before buying it.
Day to day
Roughly 75 students live in each of the eight LLC buildings -- Gem, Syringa, Sage, Upham, CNR, Gault, Engineering, and Honors -- housing over 600 residents in total, each building built around a specific academic theme (for example Honors, natural resources, or engineering) to connect coursework with dorm life. Housing describes the suite common living area as air conditioned, and shared spaces include private study rooms, lounges, community kitchens, and game rooms, giving LLC residents a smaller, more suite-like experience than Wallace or the Tower. Returning LLC residents are not required to carry a meal plan, unlike other halls, though it's still encouraged.
Move-in day
LLC residents check in starting Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2026, at their assigned timeslot booked through the housing portal, the same as every other first-year hall. Because the LLC is spread across eight separate buildings rather than one central location, confirm the exact building address on your housing assignment before move-in day. Meal plans activate at noon on move-in day and Vandal Welcome orientation follows Aug. 20, ahead of classes starting Aug. 24.
