Common questions about University of Alabama at Birmingham dorms

Is on-campus housing required for freshmen at UAB?
Yes. All first-time freshmen entering Fall 2026 who graduated high school the same year or the year before their first semester at UAB must live on campus in freshman housing for the entire academic year. Exemptions are handled case-by-case through an Exemption Form and are granted only in extreme and rare circumstances.
How much does UAB freshman housing cost?
The freshman housing rate for the 2026-2027 academic year is $4,240 per semester, the same rate across Blazer, Gold, and McMahon Halls.
When is UAB move-in for fall 2026?
Move-in runs August 19-23, 2026, in individually assigned time slots with a 20-30 minute unload window per vehicle; cars then relocate to the 16th Street Parking Deck.
Can I choose my own room and hall at UAB?
If you complete your housing application before February 27 at 5pm CST, you get access in June to self-select from available rooms in Blazer, Gold, and McMahon Halls, and can pull in roommates via a mutual Roommate Group. Applicants after that deadline are administratively assigned instead.
Is there an Honors housing option at UAB?
Yes — the Honors Living Community is available in all three first-year halls (Blazer, Gold, and McMahon), with the same room amenities as standard rooms plus added programming.
