Southern Miss Freshman Dorms 2026

Southern Miss's own FAQ says freshmen will no longer be required to live on campus starting Fall 2026, though a separate official policy page still describes an active mandatory first-year residency requirement — USM has not reconciled the two as of this writing. Freshmen land in one of four halls on the north or east sides of campus: Vann and Luckyday Citizenship Hall in the newer Century Park South complex (2014), and the older Hillcrest and Wilber halls. Every room gets a fixed-frame Twin XL bed that cannot be lofted or raised with risers for safety reasons — bed height changes only through a maintenance work order. Air conditioning is not stated on any official USM housing page for any of the four halls, an unusual gap for a Deep South campus. Fall 2026 move-in for incoming freshmen and transfer students participating in Golden Eagle Welcome Week runs August 18-19, with returning residents and other transfers/upperclassmen moving in August 21.

What to bring to Southern Missdorms — and what’s already there

Every Southernfreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.

Real, unresolved contradiction on USM's own site as of 2026-08-21: the Housing FAQ says freshmen are no longer required to live on campus beginning Fall 2026, but the dedicated first-year residency policy page still describes it as an active, current requirement with no end date — both pages carry the identical last-updated stamp. Confirm directly with USM Housing before assuming a deposit isn't needed.

Beds cannot be lofted for safety reasons and bed risers are not permitted — bed height can only be changed via a maintenance work order.

Any item with a heating element is banned outright, not just hot plates — this catches toaster ovens and similar appliances students often assume are fine.

Freshmen applying as first-years are housed with other freshman students only, per USM's roommate-matching policy.

Halls now stay open through all holiday breaks (a recent policy change) with a break-housing sign-up process — no longer a mandatory move-out.

Common questions about Southern Miss dorms

Are freshmen required to live on campus at Southern Miss?
USM's own pages disagree. The Housing FAQ states freshmen will no longer be required to live on campus starting Fall 2026. A separate residency-requirement page still describes an active mandatory first-year policy with exemptions for students 20+, married students, those with dependent children, active military, and students living within 50 miles of a parent/guardian. Confirm your status directly with USM Housing.
Can I loft my bed or use bed risers?
No to both. Beds cannot be lofted for safety reasons, and risers aren't permitted. Bed frame height can only be changed by submitting a maintenance work request.
What bed size is provided?
All residence hall beds are Twin XL, with 80-inch mattresses.
