Ogg Hall Dorm Checklist 2026

University of Wisconsin–Madison

Doubles (some with private bath), triples & quads in 4-room clusters — modern Southeast hall (2007), walk-in closets

The newest Southeast hall (opened 2007) — ~863 residents with high ceilings, walk-in closets, and per-floor kitchens/lounges, across from Gordon Avenue Market and near the Kohl Center and State Street. Home to the Business Connect learning community for Wisconsin School of Business direct admits. AC + a provided fridge in every room.

  • Your room already has a fridge — UW provides a 3.1 cu ft micro-fridge/freezer in every room and you can't swap in your own, so don't buy one. A microwave is NOT provided, though: bring one (one per room, low-wattage).
  • Candles, incense, and any open flame are banned campus-wide (a religious/cultural exemption exists through your Residence Life Coordinator). String lights are allowed but can't be hung from the ceiling or pipes.

Living in Ogg Hall: what to know before you pack

The room

Ogg is the modern Southeast hall — opened in 2007, so it feels newer than the towers: high ceilings, carpeted rooms, and walk-in closets in the triples (doubles-with-bath have built-in closets). Rooms are mostly triples, plus doubles with private bathrooms and quads arranged in clusters of four rooms sharing a bathroom, and they're air-conditioned with thermostat control. The furniture is the UW standard, including the built-in compact fridge/freezer — so no fridge purchase — and no microwave (bring your own, one per room, or use the per-floor kitchen). Twin XL sheets fit the 80-inch mattress. The walk-in closets are a genuine perk: they swallow storage that would otherwise eat your floor space.

Day to day

Ogg sits on Dayton Street in the Southeast neighborhood, across from Gordon Avenue Market and near the Kohl Center and State Street — central and lively, but a newer, slightly calmer building than the Sellery/Witte towers. Each floor has its own kitchen and lounge, there's a music practice room downstairs, and Cross-College Advising and a couple of classrooms are on the first floor. Ogg is home to Business Connect, the learning community for students directly admitted to the Wisconsin School of Business, which makes it a natural pick for business-bound first-years who want their neighbors in the same program. Between the modern rooms, the walk-in closets, and the central location, Ogg is one of the more sought-after Southeast assignments.

Move-in day

Move-in is August 29–31, 2026 (early move-in August 26 for approved programs), classes begin Wednesday, September 2. Ogg is smaller than the towers (~863 beds) and newer, so move-in tends to be a bit smoother, but still arrive at your assigned window. Thanks to the walk-in closets you can bring more hanging storage and fewer bulky bins, though a few under-bed bins still help. Bring Twin XL bedding, a shower caddy and shower shoes, hangers, and a microwave if you want one — but not a fridge (provided). AC means a fan is optional. Leave candles, halogen lamps, space heaters, and window AC units at home.

Ogg Hall FAQ

Does Ogg Hall have air conditioning?
Yes — Ogg's rooms are air-conditioned with individual thermostat control (68–74°F), and since the building opened in 2007 the climate control is modern and reliable. It's one of the more comfortable first-year halls for a warm Wisconsin move-in. A fan is optional here for circulation or white noise, not a necessity. Personal window AC units are banned campus-wide, but you won't want one with central AC in the room.
Do Ogg rooms have walk-in closets?
The triples do — walk-in closets are one of Ogg's signature features and a real storage advantage over older halls. Doubles with a private bathroom have built-in closets instead. Either way, plan your packing around hanging storage: bring plenty of hangers and a few slim garment organizers, and you can skip some of the bulky under-bed bins other halls require. It's worth confirming your specific room type in your assignment, but if you land a triple, that walk-in closet is a genuine perk.
Is there a fridge or microwave in Ogg?
A fridge is provided; a microwave is not. Every Ogg room has a university compact fridge/freezer built in that you can't remove or replace, so don't buy a mini-fridge. For a microwave, bring your own (one per room, low wattage recommended) or use the kitchen on your floor. As at every UW hall, that inverts the usual list: skip the fridge, and just decide whether you want an in-room microwave.
What is the Business Connect community at Ogg?
Business Connect is the Residential Learning Community for students directly admitted to the Wisconsin School of Business, housed in Ogg. Living in it puts you on a floor with other business direct-admits and adds program-specific advising, events, and connections early in your first year — useful in a competitive business program where your dorm neighbors become your study group. It's opt-in through the housing application. If you're a business direct admit, requesting Ogg/Business Connect is an easy way to build your network from week one.
