Living in Dogwood Hall: what to know before you pack

The room

Dogwood's standard rooms are Twin XL semi-suite doubles with the full UT furniture set — desk, chair, dresser — plus the MicroFridge (fridge, freezer, and microwave) that comes in every UT room and replaces any appliance you might have bought; personal fridges aren't permitted. The mattresses come with nylon covers, but a mattress protector and topper are still the right call for comfort. A handful of residents land in one of the building's eight four-bedroom apartments, which upgrade to a full refrigerator, oven, and microwave — if that's you, your kitchen packing list grows and your appliance list stays empty. Everyone buys Twin XL bedding.

Day to day

Dogwood opened in 2019 as part of the west-campus residential cluster it shares with Magnolia and Poplar, connected by a courtyard of green spaces. Floor-by-floor it's built for self-sufficiency: laundry and a shared kitchen on every floor plus a living area, with a post office, recreation room, multipurpose rooms, and indoor bicycle storage in the building — that last one being a quietly great feature if you're bringing a bike to campus, since Knoxville's hills reward one. The rec facilities sit close by on the west side. It's the newer, calmer corner of UT's freshman geography, with modern buildings as the draw.

Move-in day

UT staggers move-in across the week before classes start Monday, August 17, 2026 — your window arrives with your housing assignment, so watch your UT email. Skip the fridge and the microwave entirely (the MicroFridge is in the room; personal fridges are banned) and use the space in the car for what UT doesn't provide: Twin XL bedding, towels, a shower caddy, and a desk lamp. If you're bringing a bike, Dogwood's indoor bike storage means you can — bring the lock. August in Knoxville is hot; take the earliest slot in your window, get your post office box combination at check-in, and coordinate shared gear with your roommate beforehand.

Dogwood Hall FAQ

Does Dogwood Hall include a fridge and microwave?
Yes — every Dogwood room includes UT's standard MicroFridge, a combined refrigerator, freezer, and microwave, and university policy doesn't allow personal refrigerators on top of it. The eight four-bedroom apartments in the building go further, with a full-size refrigerator, an oven, and a microwave in each apartment's kitchen. Either way, appliances are the one category you can fully skip when shopping for Knoxville — spend the budget on bedding, storage, and the things UT doesn't provide instead.
What are the apartments in Dogwood Hall?
Dogwood contains a limited set — eight total — of four-bedroom apartments alongside its standard semi-suite doubles. Apartment residents get private bedrooms around a shared living space with a real kitchen: full refrigerator, oven, and microwave. They're rare enough that most first-years shouldn't plan around landing one, but if your assignment says apartment, adjust your packing accordingly: add basic cookware, dishes, and cleaning supplies for a real kitchen, and coordinate furniture-ish extras (rug, lamps, TV) with three roommates instead of one.
Can I bring a bike to Dogwood Hall?
Yes, and Dogwood makes it unusually easy — the building has indoor bicycle storage, so your bike lives protected from Knoxville weather rather than chained outside. Campus is hilly and spread out enough that a bike genuinely earns its keep, especially from the west-side residential cluster. Bring a solid U-lock, register the bike with campus services when you arrive, and pack a small patch kit. Between the bike storage, the courtyard, and the rec facilities nearby, Dogwood suits an active-lifestyle freshman better than almost any UT hall.
What should I NOT bring to Dogwood Hall?
Start with the fridge — UT provides a MicroFridge in every room and personal refrigerators aren't allowed. Then UT's fire-safety list: no candles or anything open-flame, no open-coil appliances like space heaters or toasters, no halogen lamps, no incense, no George Foreman-style grills — and notably, no electric blankets, a ban that surprises people packing for East Tennessee winters (bring a warm comforter instead). Extension cords are allowed only if UL-approved, 16-gauge, six feet or less, unspliced, and never run under carpet — a surge-protected power strip is the simpler answer.
Is Dogwood Hall a good hall to live in?
That depends on what you're optimizing for, but here's what's verified: Dogwood Hall has Twin XL (long twin) beds with Standard frame of under-bed storage, and is fully air conditioned.
